Tokyo and Osaka in 1988, at the height of Japan’s bubble economy. Kazuma Kiryu, a young yakuza framed for a killing on a vacant lot in Kamurocho, and Goro Majima, exiled to run a cabaret club in Sotenbori, carry a story about money, loyalty and land — and each has three fighting styles to switch between mid-brawl.

Between chapters both cities fill up with substories, karaoke, disco and Pocket Circuit racing. The Director’s Cut adds new cutscenes for Kiryu, Majima and Nishikiyama, English and Chinese voice tracks, and Red Light Raid, the series’ first online mode: co-op combat missions for up to four players, with 60 characters from the story to choose from. Red Light Raid needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Worth knowing before you buy: this is a Game-Key Card. The card in the box holds no game data, only a licence key, so the full game downloads over the internet and needs free space on the console.
